NLCS Jeju has been an IB World School since June 2012. All students in our Sixth Form study for the IB Diploma, a globally recognised, academically rigorous qualification designed to address the intellectual, social and emotional and physical well-being of students.

The combination of breadth, scholarship and academic rigour offered by the IB Diploma programme ensures that our students enjoy an exciting and intellectually stimulating experience in the sixth form and that they will be provided with an excellent preparation for life at university and in the wider world beyond.

IB Diploma students are required to study one subject each from the following groups:

  • Group 1 Language and Literature
  • Group 2 Additional Language
  • Group 3 Individuals and Societies
  • Group 4 Experimental Sciences
  • Group 5 Mathematics
  • Group 6 Creative Arts

Students at NLCS Jeju may choose an additional subject from Groups 3 or 4 in place of a Group 6 Creative Arts subject. Three subjects are studied at Higher Level and three at Standard Level.

All Diploma programme students must also pass the Diploma Programme Core which includes:

Extended Essay
Students work with a supervisor to independently research and write a 4000 word essay relating to one of subjects being studied. Students at NLCS Jeju begin their Extended Essay in the Spring Term of Year 12 and complete it in the Autumn Term of Y13.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
This is a course about critical thinking in which students inquire into the nature and process of knowing. The TOK course encourages students to think across the academic disciplines. It is assessed through presentation and an essay.

Creativity, Action and Service (CAS)
All students involve themselves in activities outside the classroom in the key areas of the arts, physical activity and service with the community. Students are expected to show commitment to their activities and to reflect on what they have learned about the world and about themselves through their participation.
