Learn Russian in St. Petersburg

The Liden & Denz Language Centre St. Petersburg is situated in the historical city centre, between the Russian Museum, the Mikahilovsky Zamok (built by Pavel I, son of Catherine the Great), the circus and near two very nice parks. The area offers some of the finest examples of St.Petersburg architecture and is close to the Fontanka and Neva rivers. The closest metro station (Nevsky Prospekt/Gostiny Dvor) is a five minute walk away. A wide range of cafés, bars, restaurants and shops are available just across the street.

Our centre is located on the second floor of a historic 19th century building. The school features 13 spacious bright classrooms, all suitable for group or mini-group classes. All classrooms are equipped with modern wall-mounted TV/DVD sets. Our students can also access free Wi-Fi, our resource centre and a small refectory. Furthermore, the school operates a booking desk for excursions and onward travel.

Teaching method at Liden & Denz

Our schools operate year round and our courses are available at all centres. Our destinations can be freely combined under the condition that start dates for group courses are met.

All our courses are based on communicative approaches and combine learning common expressions used in everyday situations with thorough and systematic grammatical approach. This is of vital importance for learning a language like Russian, which has an inflectional system and a non-fixed word order – a language in which word endings or word’s place create the meaning.

Conversational topics are given with appropriate grammar structures, while the grammar part of the course proceeds gradually from simple “basic concepts” to more complex issues in a psychologically proven order (e.g. naming objects – describing locations – actions with objects – moving to and from, etc.).

One of our most important principles consists in giving our students the linguistic means to express themselves in everyday situations by constant training of communicative skills and models, which allows learners to reach their own communicative objectives.

All our teachers are native speakers and hold a university degree either in Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language (RKI) or Linguistics. We encourage our teachers to learn new languages, because we believe that having this experience as students is a valuable source for further improvement of their professional skills.

Our teachers apply a variety of techniques ranging from introduction to the Russian language history, from etymology and comparative linguistics to role-play, live discussions and creative work (drawing, story telling) in the class.

Teacher training sessions take place on a regular basis. In a team work they share their experience, discuss the problems they recently solved, new methods and techniques they implemented and evaluate new teaching materials.

Liden & Denz is owned by co-founder Walter Denz, who grew up in Zurich, Switzerland and graduated from the University of St. Gallen (HSG) in International Relations in 1989. He moved to London for an M.Sc. degree in Political Theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and settled in early 1992 in post-communist Russia. Together with his partner and friend Sven Lidén, he set up the Liden & Denz Language Centre in St. Petersburg, one of the first private institutions for the teaching of Russian as a foreign language. Later, Walter ventured into tour operating (outbound) and in 2004 opened a sister school in Moscow, followed by Riga (opening in January 2014). From 2008-2011 Walter was president of the International Association of  Language Centres IALC and since 2012 he is vice-chair of EAQUALS. He also is chairing the board of the Deutsche Schule St. Petersburg.

Over 20 years after our first students had received their certificates, our ever increasing student numbers are proof that learning Russian is considered a valuable asset today, apart from the fact that it is great fun.

We believe you should choose to learn Russian with us for the following reasons:

  • Our language centres are internationally recognised, inspected and well known.
  • Our schools in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Riga have convenient central locations and feature attractive modern facilities. Courses at all levels are run year round with dates, programmes and prices identical for all our centres.
  • Our method combines intensive teaching in small groups with a personal, communicative approach and a friendly atmosphere. This keeps motivation high as students progress fast and with ease.
  • Liden & Denz is an official telc examination centre. The popular Russian language exam can be taken in all our language schools year-round once per month.
  • A clear course syllabus, frequent host family checks, detailed entry and exit questionnaires and clear complaint procedures underline our commitment to quality and quality control.

We do all this because we want you to fully enjoy your Russian language stay with Liden & Denz!
