[About Birkbeck University of London]

Birkbeck is a world-class research and teaching institution, a vibrant centre of academic excellence and London’s only specialist provider of evening higher education.

[Entry Requirement]

1.     Entry requirements for modular Certificates of Higher Education

There is no application process for these awards, as there are usually no selection processes or interviews for modular certificates. Where entry requirements or tests do apply, you will find the relevant information in the course descriptions (always under the heading 'Entry requirements').

Students enrol directly on the modules they wish to study and are admitted on a 'first come, first served' basis. You can study at your own pace, taking 1 or 2 modules each year and building up your credits to gain a certificate.

Please note: you must be 18 years of age (or over) at the point of enrolment. And, to benefit fully from your studies, you should be able to read, write and speak English fluently. If you feel that you need to improve your written or oral skills in English, we recommend that you enrol on one of our English language courses.

2.     Entry requirements for programme Certificates of Higher Education

Like undergraduate degree programmes, these awards require you to complete an application form for entry to the whole programme.

You apply directly to Birkbeck, following the same procedures as for Foundation Degrees and BA/BSc/LLB degrees.

3.     Entry requirements for BA/BSc/LLB degree programmes

Our students come to us with a wide variety of qualifications and experience, and we believe that the variety that this provides adds to the student experience at Birkbeck. (However, applicants for admission to degree programmes must be at least 18 years of age.)

You will find the entry requirements for all courses in the online course listings.

The UCAS tariff score is applicable to you if you have recently studied a qualification which has a UCAS tariff equivalence (including A-levels, IB, GNVQs and BTEC programmes). We also welcome students with Access to HE Diplomas.

Applicants from partner institutions within the Institutional Partnership Agreement (IPA) are guaranteed an offer at Birkbeck.

4.     Entry requirements for Foundation Degree programmes

Foundation Degrees are designed specifically for students with no formal qualifications, although applicants for admission to degree programmes must be at least 18 years of age.

Applicants for admission to Foundation Degree programmes must be at least 18 years of age, but are not required to satisfy the general entry requirements for honours degrees (BA/BSc). Admission is based on the likelihood of your ability to complete the programme successfully and to derive benefit from it.

We take account of all relevant information, which may include:

-       your personal statement

-       assessment at interview

-       performance in written tasks or other tests set for admission purposes

-       other evidence of your performance or potential

-       relevant work experience

If you have already studied in English

Please note that if you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, unless you have already obtained a Bachelor's degree from a 'majority English-speaking country' as defined by the UKVI or are a national of one of these countries, then you will be asked to obtain an English language score equivalent to IELTS 5.5, with at least 5.5 in each subtest.

If you are still improving your English

It is possible to apply to Birkbeck while you are working to improve your English, as long you reach our minimum requirements by the time you start your course.

It may sometimes be possible to be accepted onto an academic programme with less than the above scores on the condition that you attend a pre-sessional programme approved by Birkbeck. Each case will be considered on its own merits.
