We redesigned this interface with the aim of providing you with all the necessary information about our School, its ethos and the everyday life of our students and staff.  We hope that it will render a true and honest picture of all the good teaching and learning practices that the educational journey at our School promotes and provides. We also hope that this will be a space where we can celebrate the milestones, creative and academic, achieved by our students throughout their educational adventure here at School.

Founded in 1909, St. Catherine’s High School is a Private Independent Educational Institution located in Pembroke, Malta, and  run by lay staff under the direction of the Principal, Mrs. Marie Midolo.

The School is open to local and foreign students, boys and girls, ranging from the Early School (2 year olds) through the Junior and Senior School (16 year olds), up to the standard required for the General Certificate of Education.

History

In 1909, an Italian pioneer in education, Dott. Enrico Wilfred Cortis, embarked on the project of founding a Vatican-sponsored school for boys in Rome. When Church and State relations became strained, the school closed down but  the Cortis Family decided to relocate to Malta and operate a girls’ school in Malta. The School was passed on to his unmarried daughter, Ms. Laura Cortis and took the name of the scholarly saint, St. Catherine of Alexandria, and made a name for itself all over Malta.

Decades later, the School was passed on to Ms. Cortis' niece, the charismatic and highly respected Mrs. Maria Rita Mangion Cortis. Parents flocked to register their children and the school-house in High Street, Sliema, could no longer provide for the physical, psychological and educational needs of this growing population of young Maltese and International students.

It was twenty years later that, in the determined and courageous hands of the present Principal, Mrs. Marie Midolo, great grand-daughter of the Founder, and her husband, Mr. Paul Midolo, a major step was taken - the re-location of St. Catherine’s High School to the present spacious and airy premises in Pembroke.  It took much toil and perseverance to see the construction and finishing of the school through, but the will to hold the School’s flag high and to keep up the reputation of excellence in education that the School had earned over the years, were the pillars of strength for the Principal.

St. Catherine’s has flourished from a small, private, elitist school back in 1909, to a fully-fledged comprehensive co-educational institution that is the St. Catherine’s of today.  Today, St. Catherine's High School incorporates within it the:

                - Early Years School (Flutterby and Pre-Junior);

                - Junior School;

                - Senior School;

                - AClass Academy English

                - Official Tuition Centre for the The University of Sheffield

                  Malta-based post-graduate programme

From generation to generation, the direction of the School was kept by members of the same family – united, professional, dedicated, educational visionaries who breathed life into the School, never flinching in time of struggle and stress, and rising to meet the challenges of the times.

Since the inception of the School, another equally important factor to its stability and success has been the family ambiance that has always been an essential component of the School ethos. Teachers, parents and students feel that they belong to the School and are part of this big family that is our 500-strong school population. As a result, St. Catherine’s flag flew high at all times, contributing to create holistically well-educated citizens of Malta and of the world, who were capable of meeting the changing work and academic expectations of the times they lived in.

St. Catherine’s High School continues today its work of creating a haven to the many parents who enter into its fold dreaming of a sound, holistic, competency-based curriculum for their children.  Mrs. Marie Midolo, the Principal at St. Catherine’s, urges that it is a “call to us all, as educational professionals, to believe in students, younger and older, in their potential to learn and to be facilitators of knowledge for others.”  It is also a call to action which St. Catherine’s High School is collaboratively and promptly responding to.

The School works incessantly to develop future-oriented strategies aimed at creating learning processes for our students that are innovative, engaging and motivational in nature. St. Catherine’s vision centres on creating learning outcomes providing academic excellence, sound and active citizenship, and holistic personal and social development of all its students.

To this effect, the last three years have seen great progress – the new state-of-the-art Flutterby Child Care Centre, catering for students as young as two years old, and the AClass School of English for foreign students, young and older, are part of this educational leap of the School.    The launching of the post-graduate Masters in Early Childhood Education and Doctorate in Education programmes in 2009, which The University of Sheffield has agreed to host in Malta at St. Catherine’s, marks yet another step in the direction of the School’s belief in the importance of lifelong learning.
